SOFTBALL: OSU splits Day 2 at Red Desert Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Oklahoma State softball team split the second day at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah, on Saturday. The Cowgirls defeated Colorado State 4-1 in game one and fell to Utah Valley 3-1 in the second contest.

In the first game vs CSU, the Cowgirls scored first in the bottom of the second when Gessenia DeLaCruz singled and Stephanie Brewer crossed the plate on an error by the left fielder.

Colorado State scored in the top of the sixth to tie it at one apiece, however it didn’t take long for the Cowgirls to respond. In the bottom of the sixth, Brewer scored on a throwing error by the pitcher and later in the inning, Taylor Woodall scored on an error by the third baseman. Tarah Ettinger singled to score DeLaCruz to take a 4-1 lead, which would hold up to be the final score.

Starter Kat Espinosa went seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight. The Cowgirls also put together 10 hits.

In the second game, Utah Valley would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. OSU cut that lead in half in the bottom of the third when Shelby Davis scored on a single to right field by Ettinger.

However, Utah Valley would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth and the Cowgirls fell 3-1 and evened their record at 2-2 on the season.

Starter Simone Freeman went 5-1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out nine. Espinosa threw the final 1-2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out three.
