OWU CLASSIC: Lady 'Cats drop Kansas Wesleyan, 81-70


BARTLESVILLE — The Rogers State women’s basketball team stretched its winning streak to four games with an 81-70 victory over Kansas Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at the Oklahoma Wesleyan Classic.

After trailing for much of the opening half, the Hillcats took over the lead for good with 15 minutes to play thanks to consecutive 3-pointers by Kelby Fritz, Sierra Cornwell and Ariani Silva, giving RSU an eight point lead. With 11:36 left in the contest, the Coyotes trimmed the deficit to one point but the Hillcats refused to relinquish the lead, using a 6-0 run to give them some breathing room. RSU took its first double digit lead with three minutes to play as the Hillcats forced a turnover and Logan Froese followed it up with a layup to lead 71-61. RSU maintained the advantage in the final minutes of play to earn the 81-70 victory.

The Coyotes held the advantage for most of the first stanza with their largest lead of 10 points coming with 7:46 remaining in the half. The Hillcats bounced back with a 7-0 run and took a one-point lead with 1:30 to play before intermission with a trey from Taylor Jeffs. However, KWU registered a 39-38 lead at the break.

Froese led the Hillcats in scoring for the second time this season with 17 points. The Claremore, Okla. native was a perfect 5-for-5 at the charity stripe and 6-for-7 from the field.  Fritz tallied 13 points while Leah Smith added 10 points to complete the double digit scorers. The Hillcats shot 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc, a season high in each category.

KWU was led by Alecia Olson with 25 points and six rebounds. Christian Cassity registered 13 points and Stephanie Frost scored 10 points to round out the Coyotes double digit scorers. As a team, KWU shot 39 percent from the field and 83 percent at the charity stripe. RSU won the battle on the boards 33-29.

Rogers State (4-0) will return to action at the Oklahoma Wesleyan Classic in Bartlesville, Okla. on Saturday as the Hillcats take on Bethany College (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Live audio will be streamed on the Hillcat Network at
