HALO CLASSIC: No. 5 Hillcats hold off St. Thomas, 63-62

SAN ANTONIO — The final day in the Alamo City was a hard fought affair for NAIA No. 5-ranked Rogers State coming down to the final seconds in a 63-62 victory over University of St. Thomas (Texas) inside Mabee Gymnasium at the Halo Classic Presented by Drury Inn.

The game was a tale of two halves for the Hillcats especially senior guard Justynn Hammond. The Seattle, Wash. native came alive in the second stanza scoring all 17 of his points in the half. He finished with 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season.

Hammond nailed a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put the Cats up 63-60. UST’s Travis Lampley drove the left side of the lane for an easy lay-up with 3.4 seconds remaining in the game trimming the RSU lead to 63-62. A pair of missed free throws from the Hillcats allowed the Celts to rebound the ball with seconds remaining but UST was unable to get a shot off prior to the final horn and RSU clung to the victory.

UST led at the intermission 26-21having forced RSU into seven turnovers in the half.

Donald Williams led the Hillcats with 18 points shooting 7-of-16 from the field. Alex Ewings totaled 10 points as RSU out-rebounded the Celts 31-27. RSU shot 45.7 percent from the field despite shooting just 6-of-24 from behind the arc.

Lampley led all scorers with 20 points as the senior guard dished out nine assists for the Celts. Bryan Kaase added 11 points for St. Thomas (4-1) who made three 3-pointers as a team for the game.

Rogers State (6-0) will remain on the road Tuesday, traveling to Kansas City, Mo. facing Avila at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on RSU Radio 91.3FM and streaming online at www.rsuradio.com and on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live
