GOLF: Hillcats finish 5th in San Antonio Shootout

SAN ANTONIO — An 18 stroke improvement by the Rogers State men’s golf team from Monday’s round one to Tuesday’s round two of the San Antonio Shootout led to a fifth place finish for the Hillcats.

Dangerous wind conditions Monday at the AT&T Canyons Course at TPC San Antonio resulted in the tournament being shortened from three rounds to just two. After posting a 323 team score in the only round Monday the Hillcats sat at sixth on the tournament scoreboard.

But improved scores by every RSU golfer resulted in 305 team card on Tuesday and a tournament total of 628 for the fifth place finish. The Cats finished eight strokes of NAIA No. 17-ranked Lubbock Christian and eleven strokes ahead of No. 10-ranked Northwood University (Texas).

Defending National Champion and No. 2-ranked Oklahoma City claimed the team title with rounds of 312-295 for a 607 two round total, finishing one stroke ahead of host Oklahoma Christian. The Eagles, members of the Heartland Conference and transitioning to NCAA Division II membership, posted scores of 317-291 for a second place finish. OC was the 2012 NAIA National Runner-Up.

No. 12-ranked Our Lady of the Lake finished third with a609 tournament card while No. 17-ranked Johnson & Wales University (Fla.) shot 616 over two rounds for fourth place.

After firing an opening round 79 at the 6,826 yard, par 72 course, Tanner Owens shot one-over par on Tuesday to tie for seventh with a 152 tournament card. Freshman Garrett Fey finished three strokes behind Owens with rounds of 79-76 to tie for 16th.

Senior Preston Bartley made an eight stroke improvement from the opening round to second round as he penciled a 76 Tuesday. Bartley finished tied for 36th with a 160 tournament total.

Mark Healy fired a 161 combined score to tie for 38th while Trevor Williams finished tied for 51st with a166 final.

OCU’s Sondre Ronold and OLLU’s Aaron Flores tied for the individual title after finishing with a 148 tournament score.

Rogers State will travel to Irving, Texas for The 2013 NAIA Contender hosted by Northwood University at TPC Four Seasons on March 4-5.
