GOLF: Hillcats finish 11th at 2013 NAIA Contender


IRVING, Texas — Rogers State men’s golf shot its worst team score Tuesday in the third and final round of the 2013 NAIA Contender at TPC Four Seasons.

After shooting an opening round 303 and a 319 second round Monday, RSU carded a team 321 in the third round for an 11th place finish in the 14 team field shooting 943 at the par 71, 6,687 yard course.

Hagen Barmasse shot a team best one-under par, 70 in the opening round Monday but rounds of 81 and 80 led to a 231 tournament total to tie for 19th.

Garrett Fey shot a 235 tournament card with rounds of 75-83-77 as the freshman tied for 33rd in the tournament hosted by Northwood University (Texas). Senior Tanner Owens struggled with a 12-over par opening round but rebounded with rounds of 76 and 79. The Ft. Gibson, Okla. native tied for 40th finishing 25-over par for the tournament.

Preston Bartley rounded out the Hillcat five as the senior carded a 239 tournament total to tie for 43rd. His first round total of 75 tied as the second best score amongst Hillcat golfers at the tournament.

RSU held a seven stroke lead ahead of 11th place St. Thomas University (Texas) heading into the final round of play. After a third round card of 312, St. Thomas moved two strokes ahead of RSU for a 10th place finish.

Texas Wesleyan claimed the team title with an 886 tournament score with rounds of 283-291-312. TWU finished 24 strokes ahead of second place Oklahoma Christian. Nathan Anderson of Texas Wesleyan was crowned individual champion shooting four-over par, 217, in the 54 hole tournament. Anderson shot two-under par 69 in both the first and second rounds before finishing with an eight-over par 79 Tuesday.

Rogers State returns to action on March 10 at the UST Mamiya Texas Intercollegiate Tournament at Hawks Creek Golf Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
