CLAREMORE — Leading 7-2 after four innings, it looked like the Zebras had Saturday’s game with Prairie Grove, Ark., all sewn up.
But the visitors scored five in the fifth to tie the game, only to see Claremore score in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-7 win in the Four State Classic at Legion Park in Claremore.
Claremore (13-8) got a single from Jackson Martin and an RBI liner from Ben Jones which proved to be the game-winner in the bottom of the fifth. And the Zebras held on for the win, despite four errors.
Prairie Grove scored two in the first off an error, but the Zebras tallied four in the second. Martin led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Koby Penny. An RBI-fielder’s choice by Brady Priess tied the game, and after a Brooks Sherl single, Garrett Wood singled to right to scored two for a 4-2 lead.
Two more runs scored for Claremore in the third on a single and a pair of walks. A Prairie Grove error allowed another Zebras run to cross in the fourth for a 7-2 lead.
Three singles, two doubles and two errors allowed Prairie Grove to tie the game at seven in the fifth, setting up the game-winning hit from Jones in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams had eight hits, two each from Wood, Martin and Jones. Hampton had three RBIs.
Penny got the win in relief, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits. Priess got the two-inning save. Jacob Masingale started the game and went four innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits. He struck out five.
SCHEDULING NOTE: The make-up game vs. Pryor will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 25 at Legion Park. The Zebras will also host Tulsa Memorial for two district games at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 27. The varsity and junior varsity games vs. Sapulpa on April 28 have been cancelled.
