OKLAHOMA CITY — Claremore rolled through the first two rounds of the Class 4A high school boys tennis state tournament Friday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Zebras’ two singles players and a doubles team reached Saturday’s finals to take dead aim on team favorite and defending champion Duncan.

No. 1 singles player Ryan Smith posted a pair of straight-set wins in the first round and in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.

Ross Clark, No. 2 singles, posted an easy first-round win, and then had to come from a set down to win his quarterfinal match before moving into the semis.

Derrick Taylor and Tyler Wilson, at No. 2 doubles, reached the semifinals with a pair of straight-set wins. Although the Zebras’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Zach Richardson and Blake Watson were upended in the first round, they did remain alive in the consolation bracket.

Claremore coach Mike Larimer said Friday that it marked the first time in years that the Zebras had advanced three into the state semifinals.

“Our team is focused and playing hard,” he said.

Last week, the Zebras won the regional championship in Claremore.
