There are golf tournaments, and then there’s The Masters. There are tennis tournaments, and then there’s Wimbledon. There are horse races, and then there’s the Kentucky Derby. Some sporting events stand alone. Spectacles they are. Nothing resonates through the sporting world quite like tradition. And the Kentucky Derby is built on tradition. The Kentucky Derby is on a sports pedestal all its own. The pomp. The circumstance. The genteel Southern hospitality. The Kentucky Derby is Churchill Downs. The Twin Spires. The mint juleps. Wimbledon is steeped in history. The Masters breeds legends. The Kentucky Derby is a living narrative of passion and mythology. Wimbledon has Rod Laver and Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg and Helen Wills Moody. The Masters has Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer, Bobby Jones and Sam Snead. The Kentucky Derby has Whirlaway and Secretariat, Citation and Seattle Slew. There’s Eddie Arcaro and Willie Shoemaker, Bill Hartack and Johnny Longden.
