Kelly Clarke is pretty good with a cutting torch in his hands. He grew up the son of a welder. Worked as a welder on the Alaskan Pipeline. Last week, he cut through his bond with Verdigris High School. And just like an itinerant welder, it’s time for Kelly Clarke to light out for new horizons. Seven weeks after delivering the Class 3A boys basketball championship to Verdigris, Clarke submitted his letter of resignation to the school administration. He is now hoping to fuse his coaching mettle to another program. He is blueprinting his next move. He has options, he says. In and out of coaching. In and out of Oklahoma. It would be difficult to picture Kelly Clarke out of coaching. At the age of 50, he has been coaching basketball for half his life. Some might suggest that the other half of his life was spent looking for another coaching job. His coaching resume is almost as long as that pipeline on which he worked in Alaska. His next coaching stop will be his 11th. He has coached boys basketball and girls basketball. He has coached at the collegiate level and at the highest high school level in Oklahoma. He has coached in Texas, in Arkansas, in Iowa. He has remained in one place as long as eight years, as little as one year. Still, the competitive fires fanned by the covenant of coaching burn deep within his being.
