Suggestions for new stadium

LARRY LARKIN column

Sioux Avenue is becoming one of the busiest roads in Claremore. People are going out of their way to check on the progress of the new football stadium.

It is shaping up nicely, thank you.

The first new addition this week was the new press box atop the north stands — the home side. It went up Wednesday, and during the process the old one was moved to the visitors' side.

Another big addition for the week was the bright red roof installed on the concession stand on the east end of the field.

Then, on Thursday, came the crowning event ... the first remnants of artificial turf were being installed.

While many fans (and I include myself) earlier this summer didn't believe it could happen, it now appears the field will be ready for the first high school football game. Tahlequah is scheduled to play here on Sept. 12.

Despite getting a later construction start than was first planned, then rain delays, and now 100-degree afternoons, everything is coming together nicely.

All the workers are to be commended.

Since Claremore's high school has built only two football stadiums during the past 101 years, the school and the community need to do some special things for this opening.

I have not talked with Zebras athletic director Randy Pearson or head coach Rob Gilbreath. Maybe some or all of the following suggestions are already in the planning. Maybe many other events will be scheduled. But here are a few to consider.

• On Wednesday night or Thursday night before the first game, have an "open house" for the students, parents and the community. Let them tour the dressing rooms, the coaches' offices, the press boxes and the concession locations. During past years, booster clubs have staged "Meet the Zebras Night." These two could be combined.

• During pre-game ceremonies, or at halftime, recognize from the stands the following groups:

* Members of the 1960 Zebras team that played in the first game at the just-demolished stadium. Claremore defeated Fairfax, 20-6, Sept. 9, 1960. (What are the odds one of the Fairfax players being present this year?)
