OOLOGAH — You just have to know it’s going to be a good night, an exceptional night, when footballs fall from the heavens.
And on this particular night, the football gods took “exceptional” to another level.
The high school football season arrived Thursday night, and that’s always a good thing.
But last night, in the heart of Mustang Country, the football season was heaven-sent.
The late-afternoon clouds parted, and the football season floated to earth in spectacular fashion, via brightly colored parachutes, with a picturesque Oklahoma sunset as a backdrop.
That’s the way they do things in Oologah. They go above and beyond. With a flare.
About 7:20 last night, above and beyond Mustang Stadium, two parachutists — one carrying an Oklahoma flag, the other an American flag — began their descent from on high, with a football in tow that would be used for the kickoff between Claremore and Oologah.
A rivalry stretching along 15 miles of state highway was engaged by daredevils floating through a couple thousand feet of skyway.
Footballs fell and spirits soared.
Oologah and Claremore, neighbors and rivals, kicked out the summer doldrums and kicked off the autumn frenzy.
Separated by a man-made lake and two mandated classifications, Class 6A Claremore added a third degree of separation, separating itself from Class 4A Oologah by six points in the final scoring.
An exciting way to start the season for fans of each team, a 21-15 outcome that was not decided until the final play, but not so easy on coaches of each team.
Take the winning coach, for example.
