What is a Hawaiian surfer doing on a Rogers County golf course? Anyone who knows Joe Gulisau will say he’s probably having fun and enjoying the people around him. The 68-year-old former surfing instructor has a quick answer for the same question. "A girl," he replies. That girl has been his wife for the past 32 years. Born and raised in Hawaii, Joe was hanging out on the beaches of Waikiki back in 1976. He was earning some spending money by giving surfing lessons to the tourists. That was when he first met Rhonda Warden. Her family lived in the Inola area when she was growing up and she later graduated from Sequoyah High School. She was on her final day of vacation in the Aloha State. "She and a girlfriend were leaving the next day and they decided they wanted to learn how to surf," Joe said this week out at Gordon Golf Course. "The three of us spent the day together. I gave them some lessons, and later we went sightseeing around the island. Then it was time for Rhonda to return home." This sounds like a television movie plot, a brief fling in a tropical island setting. But not this time. It was real. "I wanted to keep in contact with her. I knew she was something special, and we started exchanging phone calls and letters. Later, I made a trip to Chicago and arranged to have a five-day layover here in Oklahoma to be with her," Joe said. "More calls and letters followed, but what it comes down to is the fact we got married after being together six whole days."
