The former leader of the Oklahoma Senate says he never heard that a state representative had offered a job to a state senator in exchange for the senator’s promise not to seek re-election.

Former Senate President Pro Tem Glenn Coffee testified Monday in the bribery trial of former Rep. Randy Terrill. Coffee testified for the defense after prosecutors rested their case.

Terrill, a Republican, is accused of offering to set up former Democratic state Sen. Debbe Leftwich with an $80,000-a-year job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in exchange for Leftwich agreeing not to run for re-election in 2010. Prosecutors allege Terrill wanted a Republican colleague to run for Leftwich’s Senate seat.

Leftwich is scheduled to go to trial for bribery on Dec. 9. Leftwich and Terrill have pleaded not guilty.
