Foyil residents hear about possible postal service changes

FOYIL —

The Foyil Post Office will hold a community meeting at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the results of the POST Plan customer survey mailed to residents in January.
The survey, based on actual office workload or the amount of revenue and mail intake, offered four alternatives for customers — keep the office open but with reduced hours, provide roadside mailbox delivery with retail and delivery service through a rural carrier, use an alternative location at a local business, or relocate P.O. Box service to a nearby post office.
POST Plan began two years ago when the U.S. Postal Service decided to close and consolidate 3,700 post offices nationwide.
“We became aware that many smaller communites did not want their post office closed,” said Oklahoma Post Office Corporate Communication Manager Dionne Montague. “The Postmaster General looked at a way to preserve small town offices by reducing hours or having shared offices.”
Currently, 13,000 are looked at being reduced nationwide.
“We haven’t laid off ever,” she said. “We have given incentives to retire but we haven’t had to fire anyone.
Montague said 60 percent of residents have to agree on the same survey alternative before the office can make the change.
Survey results will have already been collected at the time of the town hall meetings.
