Homecoming 2011 proved to be a festive time with lots of ‘Pink’ filling the stands by the Foyil Panther fans.
Panther fans donned the pink ribbons and some students even painted their bodies pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
By the time kickoff came around, Foyil hit cruise control and never looked back, coasting to a 42-8 victory over Hulbert Thursday night.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in District A-8 play.
Hulbert, meanwhile, dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in district.
“Clad in pink, we still managed to play tough and pull away from a much-improved Rider football team,” Foyil head coach Jesse Leigh said.
“We preached all week about coming out fast because the last two weeks we spotted our opponents leads before we decided to start playing.”
Foyil opened with a 13-0 lead in the first quarter as Will Wood plowed over the goal-line for a 1-yard touchdown and Kody Sanders scampered in for an 11-yard touchdown.
In the second quarter, Foyil doubled its lead to 26-0 as quarterback Paxton Smith converted a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs.
“I felt we corrected our slow start problems by getting up big at halftime,” Leigh said.
Wood sparked the Foyil offense with 178 rushing yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. He also caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Sanders.
The Panthers added 16 points in the fourth quarter on Wood’s touchdown reception and Brett Whitaker’s 3-yard touchdown run.
Hulbert, however, got its only touchdown late in the fourth quarter as Brandon Thompson roared in on the 1-yard run.
According to Leigh, “We came out sluggish in the second half, but still managed to keep pace and get up 42-0 with 36 seconds left in the game.
“We challenged the O-line to play better than they did last week against Morrison, and we really worked on finishing blocks this week. It paid off too as we had 365 rushing yards.”
Foyil only attempted six pass plays, including Sanders’ touchdown to Wood.
On the year, Sanders has completed 5-of-6 passes for four touchdowns and one 2-point conversion.
Note: Whitaker replaced Smith at quarterback in the second half.
