Inola Chamber Banquet celebrates ‘Spirit of Business and Community’

INOLA —

The Inola Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated the “Spirit of Business and Community” at their annual banquet Saturday night, and it was all about Inola.
 J. Max Van Hoose, vice president of Harps Grocery, shared the architect drawings and gave an update on the new facility being built. Harps plans to have their Grand Opening on April 23.
Mayor Cheryl Charles also spoke on the past, present and future plans for the Town of Inola.
Rosalie Griffith gave an update on the Safe Route to Schools project. She reported bids will be going out shortly for the construction of new sidewalks and a walking trail.
Griffith also addressed plans for the renovation of Fleming Park and invited the community to attend future REDI meetings that will be addressing those plans.
Commissioner Kirt Thacker addressed issues in and around Inola and Rogers County. He recognized the role Mayor Charles plays in serving on various boards in the county that address aspects of county government and getting things accomplished for a better quality of life in the community.
Coach Clyde Barkley was recognized and presented a plaque by Chamber President Michael Martin for his 600 wins.
Luther Martin and Coach Ken Hayes spoke about Barkley’s 30 plus-year career at Inola and the important role model he has been on so many students and players.
His wife, Carol Ann, helped with the design of the plaque that displayed all of his 600 wins.
Michael Martin recognized a mother and daughter team with the Citizens of the Year Award. Karen Froese and Samantha DeBoer, owners of Salon 7, first started out giving free haircuts and hot dogs to students going back to school.
This past year, the Chamber teamed up with other businesses and volunteers in the community and served more than 350 students on “Back to School Day” with backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and prizes for all who attended.
