Children’s lives changed through Send A Kid To Camp

CLAREMORE —

(Editor’s Note: The names in this story have been changed to respect their privacy, but the story is real.)
Eleven-year-old Maddie has been raised by her grandparents since she was just a baby.
All along, they have provided a loving, safe environment to allow her to thrive.
Last year, the adoption was finalized and Maddie officially became their daughter.
For the previous two summers, Maddie has had the opportunity to attend the Heart O’Hills Salvation Army camp, thanks to the generosity of the Claremore community in giving to Share the Spirit Foundation’s “Send a Kid to Camp” program.
She hopes to be able to go again this year.
“She doesn’t have many kids to play with around our area,” said her mother/grandmother, Helen. “It’s great that she gets to go in the summer and meet other people.”
“Send a Kid to Camp” is raising funds to send 45 Rogers County kids like Maddie to camp. Cost is $175 per camper, for a total of $7,875 needed.
The camp fee includes lodging, meals, insurance, and a canteen card to buy snacks and craft materials.
Rogers County Department of Human Services coordinates camper eligibility, physicals and paper work. The Pilot Club of Claremore provides “ditty bags” with shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, washcloths, hair brushes and combs.
Salvation Army — Claremore Unit charters a bus to transport the campers to Tahlequah and provides clothing, bedding, shoes and whatever else the children might need for a comfortable, stress-free camp experience.
All of the children are not on welfare. All do not come from families without a working parent. But all are children from families where there is no money for anything extra.
Please send your tax-deductible donation to Share the Spirit, c/o Claremore Daily Progress, P.O. Box 248, Claremore, OK 74018, or drop by the Progress office at 315 W. Will Rogers Blvd. Names of donors will be listed unless anonymity is requested.
