4A AREA PLAYOFFS: Stilwell eliminates Inola

CLAREMORE — The Inola Longhorns got behind early and never could recover as Stilwell rolled to a 73-47 win in the Class 4A Area Tournament Friday afternoon at Claremore High School Gymnasium.

The loss to Stilwell eliminated the Longhorns.

Stilwell, meanwhile, advanced to the area championship Saturday night against Harrah. The winner moved on to the Class 4A State Tournament this week in Oklahoma City.

Early on, Stilwell set a precedent that 6-foot-8 senior post Matt Lea would own the paint. And, that’s just what Lea did, scoring 12 points in the first quarter and giving the Indians a 22-9 lead.

Stilwell raced out to a 17-4 lead before Travis Hall’s 3-pointer with 1:29 remaining in the first quarter snapped an 11-0 run by the Indians.

Hall, one of six seniors, keyed Inola’s scoring against Stilwell. The 5-foot-10 point guard tallied nine first-half points as Inola trailed Stilwell 38-18 at halftime.

Inola held Lea scoreless in the second quarter, but couldn’t stop Chase Littlejohn, who added 11 points.

Lea and Littlejohn combined for 23 of Stilwell’s 38 points in the first half.

Only three players scored for Inola in the first 16 minutes — nine from Hall, six from Casey Gill and three from Taylor Mootry.

Also, Inola was 3-of-4 from the free throw line, compared to 4-of-6 by Stilwell.

Stilwell continued to pour it on in the third quarter, scoring 18 points and extending the margin to 56-28.

Lea attacked the paint for six points that pushed his game total to 18 after three quarters. He would finish the game with 20.

Gill and Hall worked the give-and-go throughout the second half to combine for nine of the 29 points.

Gill – a 6-foot-4 senior post – led the Longhorns in scoring with 13 points while Hall finished his career with 11.

Also contributing in scoring were senior Taylor Mootry with five, Donald Chasteen with four, senior Aaron Davis with three and senior Koltyn Morel with two.

Garrett Glass, Cass Freeman and Jordan Correa also chipped in two points each.

Lea and Littlejohn combined for 31 points — scoring 20 and 11 — to lead Stilwell.

Brennan Davis and A.J. Deason also finished with nine points apiece.
