Rally draws petition supporters

CLAREMORE —

More than 200 residents gathered Saturday morning to support a grand jury petition in Rogers County.
Petition sponsors enlisted volunteers and took signatures during a rally at the Lynn Riggs Gazebo Park in Claremore.
Supporters signed the petition and another 100 residents took document packets needed to circulate the information throughout the county.
Judge Richard Van Dyke approved the petition Thursday  which will require approximately 4,487 registered Rogers County voters’signatures by Oct. 11.
The grand jury investigation questions the activities of District Attorney Janice Stiedley and her assistants Bryce Lair, David Iski and Tim Wantland, as well as,  Rogers County Commissioners Mike Helm and Kirt Thacker.
Sheriff Scott Walton and five other citizens started the petition, which is gaining substantial support from the community.
Frances Minter, widow of James Minter, who died after being scalded in 2012 at the Claremore Veterans Center, was among those attending the petition sponsors’ rally.
The case is currently the subject of a grand jury indictment involving Physician Assistant Ken Adams. The Oklahoma Attorney General investigated the death, after DA Steidley declined to file charges.
Minter said she was happy to sign the grand jury petition, which includes several questions regarding the DA’s office.
“I am in full support of something that should have been done a long time ago,”  Minter said.
Walton called the petition, “an opportunity to align with what is right.”
“I am overwhelmed by the show of support from the citizens of Rogers County today,” Russell Guilfoyle, a petitioner, said. “I look forward to working with them on the effort to improve transparency in Rogers County.”
Group leaders announced the opening of their headquarters located at 649 Ramm Road. The office will be open Labor Day, according to group organizers.
Group organizers will also be providing opportunities for voters to sign the petition next weekend at the Bluegrass and Chili Festival and at the upcoming Rogers County Fair.
They are seeking volunteers to help collect signatures in the community and at their headquarters. Interested persons or anyone needing additional information is asked to call (918) 443-0286
The group can be contacted on Facebook at Rogers County Grand Jury 2013 and by email at rogerscountygrandjury2013@hotmail.com.
