Youngsters ready for weeklong camp

CLAREMORE —

(Editor’s Note: The names in this story have been changed to respect their privacy, but the story is real.)

Fred and Betty have been raising their grandson, Jimmy,  for several years and recently adopted him.
Because of Share the Spirit’s “Send a Kid to Camp” program, Jimmy has been able to attend the Heart O’Hills Salvation Army summer camp and has enjoyed making new friends.
When the family was contacted by DHS about Jimmy returning to camp this summer, Betty informed them that Fred has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and she wasn’t sure if Jimmy should go.
Fred will undergo chemotherapy for several weeks, and DHS school-based social workers Gloria Conaway and Penny Burns assured Betty that camp would be especially helpful for Jimmy during this time.
“A week at camp will also mean less stress for grandmother and more time to spend with her husband and dealing with his treatments that will be ongoing,” Conaway said. “After camp is over we will continue to help this family with issues that will confront them during his illness.”
The “Send a Kid to Camp” program still needs several thousand more dollars to ensure 45 Rogers County kids get to board the bus for Tahlequah on Monday.
The goal is $7,875. So far, $3,678 has been raised.
All of the children are not on welfare. All do not come from families without a working parent. But all are children from families where there is no money for anything extra.
