Oologah splits in 4A sub-regional playoffs

TULSA — The Oologah Mustangs had a split in the Class 4A sub-regional basketball playoffs Thursday night at Bill Allen Field House.

The No. 16 Oologah boys beat Tulsa Webster 67-61.  The Lady Mustangs, however, fell 48-44 against the No. 16 Berryhill Maidens.

"It was a quality win against a quality team," said Oologah boys head coach Jim Deaton.  "We felt if we could keep it close early then that would give us a chance."

The Mustangs (20-4) will face third-ranked McLain in the regional championship game Saturday night at 8:00 in Cushing.  The Lady Mustangs (8-16) played today in Cushing at 1:30 in an elimination game.

Breyden Despain had a double-double, 34 points and 15 rebounds to fuel the Mustangs.  Teammates Levi Potter and Kolton Kitterman also finished in double figures, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

"We run a lot of sets for Breyden and he was able to finish," said Deaton.  "We missed some shots early but settled down and began running our offense better."

Webster was ahead 20-18 after the first period.  DeSpain kept Oologah close with 14 points in the frame, including an off-balanced trey at the buzzer.

The Mustangs were ahead for most of the second quarter but the Warriors eventually held a slim 30-29 edge at the half.

Oologah was up 43-38 after three periods.  DeSpain had all but two of his team's points in the frame.  The Mustangs then held on thanks mainly to hitting 18-of-22 at the foul line in the final stanza.

"We have been shooting free throws well all season," said Deaton.  "We did a good job of handling their pressure and getting the ball in the hands of the right people."

BERRYHILL 48, OOLOGAH 44 (girls)

The Maidens came from behind to clip the Lady Mustangs.  Oologah had a trio of double figure scorers.  Gracie Garrison had 11 points while Alex Edinger and Kelsey Garrison both scored 10.

The Lady Mustangs trailed 23-20 at the half but surged ahead 34-29 after three periods.  The final stanza was then tight throughout.

Berryhill's Jessica Boone was fouled with 26.7 seconds left and the score tied at 44-44.  She made the front end of a 1-and-1.  A pair of turnovers then ultimately sealed Oologah's fate.

The Maidens got a breakaway layup after the first turnover and then forced the second one with three seconds left.

Hailey Belveal was then fouled with .7 seconds remaining.  She converted another front end of a 1-and-1 for the final margin.
