Verdigris freshman guard Keara Battenfield raised her level of offensive production Tuesday night to lead the Class 3A No. 3 Lady Cardinals past Claremore Sequoyah, 58-34 in Will Rogers Conference play at the Jack Collins Fieldhouse.
Battenfield tallied a game-high 21 points — 15 of which came in the first half — and 6-foot-1 junior forward Courtney Risenhoover contributed with 16.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals improved to 18-1 on the season.
The Lady Cardinals had to rely on Battenfield’s scoring early in the first quarter as senior starters Baileigh O’Dell and Caitlyn Hanslovan got plagued by foul trouble.
O’Dell and Hanslovan’s aggressive defensive pressure led to two fouls each, which forced Verdigris head coach Mike Buntin to utilize his bench early.
Battenfield, though, took in the opening quarter, scoring nine of the Lady Cardinals’ first 17 points. Taylor Beck’s layup from Battenfield helped extend the Lady Cardinals’ lead to 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Claremore Sequoyah’s Jamie Eaton knocked down a three-pointer, and Aubryana Matussak and Lynsey Moniz added jumpers to highlight the Lady Eagles’ scoring.
A three-pointer by Battenfield with 1:05 left in the first quarter set off a Lady Cardinals’ 7-0 scoring run that culminated with Risenhoover’s offensive putback that pushed the lead to 21-7 with 6:11 remaining in the second quarter.
Verdigris led 34-11 at halftime.
Matussak scored seven points and Moniz finished with six to lead the Lady Eagles.
