There’s no love lost when Verdigris and Sperry tangle on the hardwood.
The Will Rogers Conference rivalry has a bit of ‘Bedlam’ to it and always seems to come right down to the wire to decide a winner.
On Tuesday, it took Cade Upshaw’s 15 points and Tyler Monroe’s 14 to spark the Class 3A No. 4 Cardinals past the Class 3A No. 6 Pirates, 67-66 at the Sperry High School Gymnasium.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 14-3 and set up a ‘Homecoming’ showdown Friday night with the Class 4A No. 7 Inola Longhorns.
The Pirates, meanwhile, dropped to 13-2 on the season.
Sperry led 23-17 after the first quarter, and continued to roll in the closing minutes of the second quarter to go up 38-29 at halftime.
Peyton Pratt reeled in top scoring honors for the Pirates with a game-high 20 points. Logan Mullins also finished with 12 points, followed by Wyatt Brooks and Casey Cole with 11 each.
With Upshaw and Monroe controlling the outside scoring for the Cardinals, 6-foot-4 senior post Caleb Jones and 6-foot-3 freshman forward Brewster Peacock established their presence in the paint.
Jones tallied 13 points and Peacock added 11 as Verdigris outscored Sperry, 39-28 in the second half.
Laef Payne and Ryan Skalnik also scored nine and five points, respectively for the Cardinals.
Sperry clung to a 50-48 lead after the third quarter.

Girls: Verdigris 70, Sperry 34
Baileigh O’Dell tallied a game-high 21 points and Courtney Risenhoover added 17 to lead the Class 3A No. 3 Verdigris Lady Cardinals past Sperry, 70-34.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals improved to 16-1 on the season.
The high-scoring Lady Cardinals’ offense stormed out to an 18-4 first quarter lead and tallied 20 more points in the second quarter to make it 38-8 at halftime.
Freshman guard Keara Battenfield joined O’Dell and Risenhoover in double figures with 14 points. Also contributing on offense for Verdigris with Taylor Beck with six points, Kenzi Risenhoover with five, Kylie Barbee with three and Caitlyn Hanslovan and Kylie Cravens with two each.
Emily Neece finished with 11 points to lead Sperry.
The Lady Cardinals return to action at 6:30 p.m. Friday night in their Homecoming game against the Inola Lady Longhorns.
