  • BASKETBALL: Verdigris rolls past Lincoln Christian

    The Verdigris Cardinals posted a pair of 23-point victories over the Lincoln Christian Bulldogs Friday night.
    The Lady Cardinals, ranked third in Class 3A, won 68-45.  The Verdigirs boys, ranked fourth in 3A, had all five starters score in double figures in an 81-58 win.

    Verdigris freshman guard Keara Battenfield raised her level of offensive production Tuesday night to lead the Class 3A No. 3 Lady Cardinals past Claremore Sequoyah, 58-34 in Will Rogers Conference play at the Jack Collins Fieldhouse.
    Battenfield tallied a game-high 21 points — 15 of which came in the first half — and 6-foot-1 junior forward Courtney Risenhoover contributed with 16.

    Verdigris senior power forward Caleb Jones tallied a game-high 30 points to lead the Class 3A No. 4 Cardinals past Claremore Sequoyah, 76-55 Tuesday afternoon in Will Rogers Conference play at the Jack Collins Fieldhouse.
    Jones had 18 of his season-high 30 in the second half as the Cardinals pulled away from a 35-31 halftime lead.

  • Verdigris-Claremore Sequoyah basketball games moved to 5 p.m.

    The Verdigris-Claremore Sequoyah varsity basketball games will still take place tonight in Verdigris.

    The Lady Cardinals will battle the Lady Eagles at 5 p.m., followed by the Cardinals and Eagles at 6:45 p.m.

    There will be no JV games, according to the Verdigris Lady Cardinals Basketball Facebook Page.

    Since moving to Verdigris four years ago, Baileigh O’Dell has had many crowning moments in her basketball career.
    On Friday, O’Dell wore her Homecoming Queen crown with pride while leading the Lady Cardinals to a 71-29 win over the Inola Lady Longhorns.

    The bigger the game, the better Verdigris junior point guard Cade Upshaw plays.
    Upshaw’s steal and layup with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter swung the momentum in favor of the Cardinals and propelled his team to a 70-61 win over Class 4A No. 7 Inola Friday night during Homecoming at the Jack Collins Fieldhouse.

  • Upshaw leads Cards in nail-biting win over arch-rival Sperry

    There’s no love lost when Verdigris and Sperry tangle on the hardwood.
    The Will Rogers Conference rivalry has a bit of ‘Bedlam’ to it and always seems to come right down to the wire to decide a winner.
    On Tuesday, it took Cade Upshaw’s 15 points and Tyler Monroe’s 14 to spark the Class 3A No. 4 Cardinals past the Class 3A No. 6 Pirates, 67-66 at the Sperry High School Gymnasium.
