Claremore HS to perform ‘South Pacific’ Friday

Claremore High School students will perform Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” beginning Friday at the Robson Performing Arts Center. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
CHS Vocal Director Ruiel Doonkeen said everyone involved has been looking forward to showcasing the grand performance for the past several months.
“We started organizing for the production in July,” said Doonkeen. “There has been blood, sweat and tears shed throughout the process, but I can gladly say the students and myself have enjoyed the ride.”
He said the quality of the show will be nothing short of professional.
The musical includes a 22-piece professional orchestra and beautifully-designed sets complete with sand dunes.
“We have fabulously talented and committed students in the cast and technical crew who have worked really hard to make this story seem as real as possible,” said Doonkeen.
This year’s performance will be somewhat different from the productions of the past two years, dealing more with adult issues and offering more of a mysterious theme with darker music. There is a bit of everything — action, romance, comedy and drama, he said.
Set in an island paradise during World War II, “South Pacific” brings two parallel love stories — threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war — together for a climatic ending that is sure to surprise audience members.
Doonkeen said he is thankful for the continued support from corporate and individual sponsors, and is confident that the show will be enjoyed by fans of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Money received from ticket purchases will be used to help fund next year’s performance.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for students, and can be purchased (cash or check only) at the Robson PAC box office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can also be purchased online at or by calling the PAC at (918) 596-7111.
