Send a Kid to Camp fundraiser kicks off

$11,000 needed to send local kids to summer camp

Summertime means the Share the Spirit Foundation is once again raising funds for its “Send a Kid to Camp” program, which makes it possible for Rogers County children to attend Salvation Army’s Camp Heart O’Hills for a week of making memories and meeting new friends.
When the bus heads to Tahlequah on June 23, they will be seeing double, with two sets of twins attending camp for the first time.
Hannah and Sarah Millard of Foyil, and Sean and Aaron Steiner of Claremore, all age 9, are excited for their first camp experience.
When asked what they’re most looking forward to, the girls shouted in unison, “swimming!” 
Both good swimmers, they can’t wait to try out the five slides and the “big mushroom” water feature.
They might even participate in the camper talent show, singing Katy Perry’s “Roar” which they performed at the school talent show this year.
“They are getting to have a lot of ‘firsts’ recently and I’m excited for them to get to go camp,” said their grandmother Kathy Ward. “I never had the opportunity when I was growing up, so it’s almost like I get to go! I think they will make memories that will last them a lifetime.”
Energetic Sean and Aaron both love sports, so they are looking forward to playing basketball, soccer and flag football all week. They also want to try archery for the first time.
“I’m a million percent excited!,” Aaron exclaimed.
The boys are already gathering their gear for the week and have received matching sleeping bags and “camp shoes.”
“We’re going to make tons of friends and take pictures of them so we won’t forget them,” Aaron said. “It was Sean’s idea. Mom’s going to buy us a disposable camera to take.”
The community’s support will make it possible for over 40 children, including Hannah, Sarah, Sean and Aaron, to have that important camp experience.
At a cost of $210 per camper, “Send a Kid to Camp” needs to raise $11,000 to make it happen.
The camp fee includes lodging, meals, insurance, and a canteen card to buy snacks and craft materials.
All money raised is used for campers. Funds are administered by the Share the Spirit Foundation.
DHS coordinates camper eligibility, physicals and paper work. The Pilot Club of Claremore provides “ditty bags” with shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, washcloths, hair brushes and combs. Salvation Army - Claremore Unit charters buses to take the campers to Tahlequah and provides clothing, bedding, shoes and whatever else the children need for a comfortable and memorable camp experience.
