Beginning June 1stchildren and teens can sign up to take part in the library’s largest event of the year, ready to read, win prizes and attend special weekly summer reading events.
The library’s Summer Reading Program is actually 3 programs in one, with an early literacy program for kids 5 and under, the core reading program for kids ages 6-11 and another for teens 12-17. Sign-up begins June 1st, but kids can sign up any time throughout the summer as the entire program runs through July. To enroll, participants must have a Will Rogers Library card. If they do not currently have a card, they will need to bring a parent or legal guardian to the Library to fill out a Library Card application to sign up.
“The program is updated every year, and designed to go along with the annual theme designated by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. This year the program is a space-oriented theme, which should be really fun for kids and teens” said Sherry Beach, Library Director. Teens will have more opportunities to win gift card prizes by playing the new ‘book bingo’ format, and kids 6-11 who complete the program will win galaxy book bags and be entered into a drawing for an Orion Telescope. Complete program details may be found on the library website atwww.willrogerslibrary.org .The “Universe of Stories” theme is part of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries state-wide reading event. “The ODL supports Summer Reading across the state with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Science” explained Beach, “and we also have great support from local sponsors such as the Claremore Rec Center, Boom-A-Rang Diner, Pizza Hut, Chick-fil-A, What-a-Burger, Chili's and Sonic, who all donate coupon prizes for the final prize drawings.”
The Friends of the Library will help kick off the program with a special children's book sale in the library lobby. The Friends have been collecting children's book donations for the past several months, and will feature this special sale while they last. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library for future contribution to the Library collection.
