Budget cuts towards education have swept all across the state of Oklahoma, leaving students, teachers, and community members alike in a state of shock, which in turn has functioned as a motivation to help develop creative ways to close the financial gap. Luckily, the student body of Claremore High School has paved a way for others to give back. The 4th annual Hope Race for education will be held on November 10, 2018, at Claremore Lake. Beginning at 8 AM, Claremore High School’s National Honor Society will host a 1 mile Fun Run, a 5K, and a newly added 10K. All funds raised through registration, shirts, and corporate sponsors will go directly back towards funding education within the school. The entirety of the Hope Race is student organized;from acquiring necessary permits, reserving site locations, meeting with city officials, budgeting, and recruiting sponsors, to creating promotion, registration, set up, and clean up committees. This race provides each individual student an opportunity to give back to their community as well engage in the process of successfully executing a philanthropic event. Change, no matter how small, starts with one person at a time and the Hope Race is allowing students to do just that.
As years have progressed, the Claremore Hope Race has flourished beyond its set expectations. Originally beginning in 2015, the race raised $5000 to help one of their own who suffered the loss of an arm in a boating accident. In 2016 and 2017, Claremore National Honor Society reached a profit joint profit of $14,500 that was used towards providing educational grants to teachers throughout the school. This year’s race, National Honor Society aspires to attain a $10,000 goal in hopes of leaving a mark on Claremore High School unlike ever before.
“Ever since the beginning, the Hope Race has functioned as an archetype for members of the community coming together and helping those who need it the most,” says National Honor Society President, Maria Bustamante, “No matter what our differences are, we are all in this organization because we have the desire to transform the world for the better. Our main goal is to leave a legacy for future generations, one that will show our compassion and gratitude for the educational system that built us.”
The Hope Race $25 for the Fun Run and 5K, and $30 for the 10K - t shirt included while supplies last. Additional t-shirts will sell for $10 and will be available while supplies last.
