Gardening will be the theme of the day at the April Family Day at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch.
Saturday, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., guests at the ranch will be working in the kitchen garden next to the house where Will Rogers was born.
Ranch Manager Jake Krumwiede, will explain the purpose of the garden, what vegetables and herbs Will’s mother would have planted and how they would have been used.
"At our April Family Day we will be working in our kitchen garden, preparing the soil and planting seeds for the season. Kids that visit can help us till the soil and plant seeds as we go. And, through out the year, they can come back and see what's grown,”said Krumwiede. “Most kids really like to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. And, while they’re doing that, we have the chance to show them how life was in the 19th century, and how growing food in a kitchen garden was a convenient and necessary practice.”
Admission to the ranch, 9501 East 380 Road, Oologah, is free. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
