Mr. Claremore Ethan Shires and Student Coordinator Reese Merriman.

Editor's Note: This story was edited to correct the name of Ethan Shires' escort.

Claremore Senior Ethan Shires was crowned Mr. Claremore last week, following an energetic lip-sync rendition and dance routine to “Umbrella” by Rihanna.

Shires is the 17th Claremore High School student to win the title since the competition began in 2001.

Mr. Claremore began as a fun fundraising activity for the school’s counseling department led by then Counseling Secretary Lynn Crockett.

The first Mr. Claremore was Jean Lopez, who played a soulful Kenny G. song on the saxophone in the school cafeteria.

Mr. Claremore was an instant and huge success.

The money raised by Mr. Claremore is used for ZAP expenses (materials, folders, decorations, etc) and various other items for the counseling department.

There have only been two years since it began that there hasn’t been a Mr. Claremore.

The format has pretty much stayed the same, with the same cash prizes ($100, $50, $25).

Initially there were 10- 18 participants.

Each guy has to ask a girl to be his escort. The Glitter Girls, as they are called, are known for their sequined gowns.

Tickets are sold and it is optional for all students.

The assembly takes place during encore so regular instructional time is not interfered with.

This year Reese Merriman was the Student Coordinator.

Merriman choreographed the group dance, designed the t-shirts, coordinated the decorations and worked independently with Ethan on his talent. Senior counselor, Debbie Grace, has overseen the event since starting at CHS in 2014.
