Sooner Success

Families with special needs children often find the road to navigating the variety of healthcare needs overwhelming and confusing. But to help make that navigation easier is Sooner Success. Tonda Ames is the Rogers and Tulsa County Coordinator for Sooner Success Region 2.

“The purpose of Sooner Success is to promote a comprehensive, coordinated system of health, social and educational services for Oklahoma children and youth with special needs – in their local community. By being located in the county, Sooner Success directly helps families with children with special needs by locating resources and information; thus saving the family time and hopefully some worry.”

Examples of some of assistance in Rogers and Tulsa counties includes connecting parents to providers and resources such as medical equipment, assisting local schools with requests for assistance with a special needs focus, organizing a weighted blanket project, hosting respite night and Sibshops, locating therapy and counseling services, and every day basic needs. Finding these resources for families is free. There are also no qualifying criteria such as income or insurance. Families can call Ames directly or can be referred, by permission, from schools and organizations. All information is kept confidential.

In addition, Sooner Success succeeds in joining existing coalitions for the purpose of achieving greater efficiency and closing existing service gaps. County coordinators are active members of the community, and Ames currently is an officer in both the Rogers County Coalition and the Healthy Partnership Coalition. This ensures that the special needs community is represented at those meetings.
