One of the most important days for Claremore’s Joe Ronnie Hooper Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is this Monday, Veterans Day.
“We take great pride in being involved in the Veterans Day Parade planning,” stated Commander Bill Richey. Along with sponsors MMS-Payne Mortuary, JM Davis Gun Museum, the VFW, DAV and American Legion work hard at making the parade a great success.
“The Veterans Day Parade is a wonderful community event, and even though this Monday is supposed to be chilly, it will be above freezing and dry, so the parade will go on as planned,” said Parade Committee Chairman Wayne McCombs. “Last year it was below freezing, the bands couldn’t play because the musicians would have frozen to their horns,” so it was cancelled at the last minute. “We were all so disappointed last year, so we are praying for warmer weather this year, it looks like we will be good to go.”
Sunday at 4 p.m. the VFW members and volunteers will be staging and organizing the Veterans Day Dinner featuring turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, and all the goodies that go with it. The dinner is set to begin at 12:15. All veterans and their families are invited to join fun and great food. Anyone who would like to volunteer should be at the VFW Sunday at 4 p.m., then back at the post at about 9-10 a.m. Monday morning. The Claremore High School Jr. ROTC cadets will be serving the dinner, while volunteers dish up and help make it run smoothly.
This year, Mercy Chefs have stepped in and have promised to provide all the side dishes, which will take a huge load off the VFW, American Legion and DAV volunteers.
The Veterans Day Parade kicks off from the Expo Center at 11:11 a.m. Grand Marshal Lewie Shaw, a WWII Marine, is set to be honored. He will also be at the luncheon for all to meet. All participants in the parade should begin lining up between 9 and 10:30 a.m., and enter through the DuPont entrance to check in.
Parade applications were due by October 31, but if you have not yet filled one out, it can be obtained at the parade website www.ClaremoreVetsParade.com. Bring it to the parade lineup and you will be placed in order of arrival.
