CATOOSA - The Class 5A No. 16 Claremore Lady Zebras toppled the Class 5A No. 19 Bishop Kelley Lady Comets 41-34 in overtime in the seventh place game of the Port City Classic Saturday at the Catoosa Indian Activity Center.
Claremore (7-10) hosts Glenpool on Tuesday and then travels to Skiatook on Friday. Those will be the final two games that count towards playoff seeding. Pairings will be released on Feb. 7.
Hailey Grant scored a game-high 17 points for the Lady Zebras. Teammates Abbey Cox and Rachel Yewell finished with 10 points apiece. Meaghan Cyr had ten points to pace Kelley (5-13).
"I thought the girls played hard and with a lot of poise," said Claremore girls head coach Whitney Jones. "They stayed calm and handled business down the stretch and throughout the overtime."
Claremore avenged a 49-44 loss to the Lady Comets in the consolation championship game at the Kelley tournament on Dec. 8.
Yewell opened the extra period with a 3-pointer 30 seconds in and the Lady Zebras maintained the lead for the rest of the contest.
Grant and Sophie Stout provided the other eight points in overtime on four made free throws apiece.
Claremore was also strong on defense in the extra frame. The Lady Comets mustered just a pair of free throws and didn't make a field goal until about 10 seconds remained.
Kelley held a slim 22-21 edge after three quarters. Yewell then opened the fourth with a trey. Only Grant and Cox had scored for the Lady Zebras prior to that long distance shot.
"I thought Rachel did a very good job coming in and knocking down some big time shots for us," said Jones.
The game eventually was tied 30-30. Both teams had a couple of shots to win in regulation, but were unsuccessful.
Claremore finally prevailed in the extra period thanks to its strong play at both ends of the floor.
"We have to continue to play hard one game at a time and lean on each other," said Jones. "We are right there. We just need a little push to get over the hump."
