City of Claremore

As the school year comes to an end, the City of Claremore is planning a variety of summer camps for kids and teens to get involved in over the summer.

Ron Paris with the Parks and Recreation Department has been planning these summer camps for the last 15 years.

“We try to add some new camps every year,” Paris said. “The Purkey sisters are doing a line dance class for kids... Dr. Richardson from RSU, she's doing a STEM camp.”

Camps are available for kids from the age of four to 15. Paris said the city works to recruit teachers from different schools to come teach the classes.

The camp “Staying on Track” is the only free class offered. It teaches kids ages eight to 12 how to build empathy and acceptance for others similar in age by utilizing certified therapy dogs. The dogs demonstrate real life examples of how to listen and be more respectful for others, according to the camp guide packet, which is available on the city's website.

Paris said students can sign up for the class as late as the day before, as long as the class is not full. Some classes are limited in size and it is asked that parents contact Paris ahead of time to pay and ensure there is a spot available for their child. Paris can be reached at 918-342-2522 or by email at rparis@claremorecity.com. Checks will be made out to the class instructor.

The “Blast” camp is a project done by Volunteers for Youth. The camp meets at the Claremore Community Center and students travel to Roller World, Incredible Pizza and Skyzone. They also spend a day swimming at the Recreation Center. For registration information for the “Blast” camp, contact Brent Bilby at 918-284-8705 or at brent.b@volunteersforyouth.com.
