Claremore sets 1,400 wreath goal for Wreaths Across America

Members of the community, including a Korean War veteran and his grandson, pictured, volunteered to lay 1,000 wreaths on the graves of 1,000 Claremore veterans laid to rest at Wood Lawn Cemetery last year.

In 2018, Wreaths Across America and it’s national network of volunteers placed over 1.5 million veterans’ wreaths at 1,433 locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.

However, last year, Claremore was only able to sponsor 153 wreaths for Wood Lawn Cemetery, and the national organization had to donate several hundred to ensure most of the veteran graves in the cemetery were marked.

“This year our goal is to place approximately 1,400 wreaths,” said Blue Star Mothers WAA Coordinator Galela Birdwell, for each of the approximately 1,400 veterans laid to rest at Wood Lawn Cemetery.

“With your generosity, we are hoping to meet this goal and ensure no veteran is forgotten,” Birdwell said.

Each hand made, fresh, live wreath is made in the US with Maine balsam and is transported across the country by volunteer truck drivers.

The cost to sponsor a wreath is $15. However, with the group fundraising code OK0057, a $30 donation provides three wreaths and a $60 donation provides six.

This year the local Wreaths Across America will be led by the Blue Star Mothers Chapter 20 in Claremore with volunteer assistance from the local chapters of the American Legion, Legionnaires and Sons of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The deadline to mail in a physical order form in November 18, and online ordering ends December 2. Order forms can be found at Blue Star Mothers, 518 N JM Davis Blvd. or can be emailed upon request from bsm20waa@outlook.com.

This year the wreath laying ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Wood Lawn Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. The ceremony is welcome to any who would like to attend.
