The Claremore City Council will look a little different on Monday, November 16th. In March, the Oklahoma Legislature voted for an amendment to the Open Meetings Acts (OMA) to allow for public meetings to be held virtually in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the Legislature did not extend the measure beyond its original Nov. 15 deadline, our public meetings will again be conducted in person for the foreseeable future.

There is a push by political and public bodies across the state to request the Legislature extend virtual OMA meetings when they reconvene in February. However, in the meantime, the OMA requires a quorum of all public bodies to be present in person in public meetings in order to conduct business. We have implemented a number of safety protocols to keep participants safe. Until conditions allow for us to return to normal operations, city council meetings will be moved to the Claremore Community Center at 2301 N. Sioux Ave. Use of this facility will allow more room to welcome participants and keep individuals socially distanced and safe. Seating will be spaced, and we are requiring all participates to wear masks. Occupancy will be limited to 30 attendees, not including staff and councilors.

We have appreciated your virtual participation, and will continue to live stream public events on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ClaremoreCity. The audio/video capabilities at this location are not as sophisticated as the council chamber, so we appreciate your patience as we work through these challenges. Individuals who wish to participate in the “Call to the Public” portion of the meeting may attend in person, or continue to submit comments via email at publiccomment@claremorecity.com or leave a voice mail at 918-283-8207.

The year 2020 has been difficult, but we appreciate your continued interest and participation in your local government. We are all juggling many distractions and challenges, but I am proud that we are working together as a community to face them.

As always, please reach out to me with feedback, questions or concerns at citymanager@claremorecity.com.

Regards,

John
