GoFundMe account set for 3-year-old local heart patient

Tanner Nolbit underwent his third heart procedure since he was six days old.

A 3-year-old tyke from Claremore is recovering in a Missouri hospital after undergoing a third surgery to repair issues with his heart. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe account has been established to help with approximately $10,000 in medical costs.

Kelsey Olsen Nolbit, Tanner Nolbit's mother, said 48 hours after tanner was born, he crashed.

The normal hole in the heart at birth usually begins to close while infants use their lungs to sustain their own body.

The blood shunts differently before birth, which is why a specific test is done at 24 hours to check for congenital heart disease. Tanner passed his test but the hole in his heart had not closed yet, Nolbit said.

When Tanner had a circumcision shortly after birth, the procedure stressed his heart enough to start closing the hole. When that happened, instead of the blood going through his aorta, it began flooding his lungs. At that point Tanner's tiny body could not support itself any longer, his mom said, making immediate medical attention imminent.

He was transferred to St. Francis Hospital and diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

He was then transferred to St. Louis, Missouri for his first open-heart surgery when he was just six days old. His second surgery was scheduled when he was six months old and his third happened recently in St. Louis.

Medical staff there were successful in performing miraculous palliative procedures to build Tanner an aorta and a single-sided functioning heart.

After the procedures, recovery has been challenging for the little guy and for doctors who had difficulty seeing fenestration that was made or his pulmonary artery on his echo Wednesday.

As of Friday morning, Tanner's chest tubes were taken out as doctors continue to monitor him making sure fluids do not accumulate in excessive amounts. His mom said this is a “step toward going home.”
