Creston Harrel of Claremore competed in a qualifier event with fishing buddy James Wayne of Vinita, on Grand Lake in Grove. This was one of eight qualifying events across the country. Harrel and Wayne hauled in a five-fish catch weighing in at 17.06 pound to top the 250-team field in the regional qualifying event and collected a first-place prize of $50,000.
Harrel and Wayne are now headed to Table Rock Lake in Ridgedale, Missouri, where they will compete in the Johnny Morris’ Bass Pro Shops US Open National Bass Fishing Amateur Team Championships this weekend.
“We are thankful to everyone at Bass Pro Shops for putting this on,” first-place winner James Wayne said. “We look forward to seeing everyone on Table Rock.”
Harrel and Wayne are up against 350 teams from around the country for a shot at the whopping $1 million grand prize, the largest in amateur bass fishing history. The event will be broadcast internationally on NBC.
The Grand Lake qualifying event benefits conservation with proceeds supporting The National Fish Habitat Partnership. Thanks to Bass Pro Shops and Toyota, 100 percent of all entry fees – over $1 million throughout the tournament – will fund critical fisheries conservation and habitat projects nationwide.
