A 10-year old child is safely back at home with his family following an extensive search by Verdigris Police Department.
Verdigris Police Chief Jack Shackelford said the child left home and then became lost-that’s when his mother contacted police.
“We searched the neighborhood and sent the high-resolution imaging drone up,” said Shackelford.
The drone was operated by the department’s licensed drone expert, Luke Miller.
“The drone happened to spot him walking by the turnpike on 266 Road so we sent a patrol car to pick him up,” Shackelford said. “It was a cold night and he didn’t have a jacket on or anything-but he was safe.”
Shackelford said he’s grateful the child was found to be safe, and that the department had this technology at their disposal.
“We’ve had this drone for about 6 months and have deployed it about half a dozen times looking for people,” he said. “This is the first really positive outcome we’ve had so far, partially because it works better in the cooler weather because body heat shows up a little better in the infrared imaging and object tracking.”
