A group of students are focused on giving back this holiday season.

Verdigris High School National Honor Society is hosting “Project Safenet” in hopes of collecting clothes, food, household items, and toys for Safenet Services.

Maria Madden, a Verdigris senior and NHS secretary, kicked it off as a solo project last year but wanted to bring it back bigger than before.

“Last year I was talking to my dad about ways I could get involved with our community,” said Madden. “Well, when my dad was younger his step-mom was a foster parent so he always had new foster kids coming and going throughout his childhood. He then mentioned collecting items for a local shelter and I thought it was a great idea.”

Madden said she dove into research on local shelters and found Safenet.

“I called them and asked questions on what they needed most, age groups, etc.,” she said. “I made flyers and went to two different neighborhoods and passed them out. I also put the flyers on every social media I have. I then spent countless hours answering questions, separating the items into different categories, making sure items were still in good condition, etc.”

Ultimately, she said collected so many items her truck was filled to the brim and Safenet was surprised and grateful.

“My NHS director, Mrs. Coleman, was wanting to figure out a big project for all of us to get involved in this year,” she said. “I mentioned to her what I did last year and she thought it would be a great idea for everyone in the school to get involved with. So far, we have started collecting boxes, decorating them, I made flyers, we’re making posters to put around the school, and we’re passing out flyers in a couple of neighborhoods today and tomorrow! I’m very excited to see the results for this year.”

The group is encouraging both students and the community to consider donating. A decorated drop-off box can be found in the Verdigris High School office through Dec. 10.
