For several years in the mid 1880s, David Payne and his “Boomers” were employing any means possible to try to get control of Indian Territory lands. Buffalo Soldiers from Fort Reno and Fort Sill regularly escorted the Boomer squatters out of the Territory back to Kansas. But these events brought ever-increasing attention to the large tracts of unoccupied land in Indian Territory. These tracts were referred to as the Oklahoma lands.
