In March of 2012, Mark Meyer, a Tulsa Firefighter, went in for his annual physical.
During that physical, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Sarcoma Cancer. It was then that he started the biggest battle of his life.
They found a lump in his abdomen which turned out to be a 32-pound tumor. While in a Houston hospital, he found himself face to face with many young children who were facing the biggest battle of their life as well.
During a couple of his treatments, he said, “It’s not fair. The children battling cancer should have been out playing ball or participating in a dance recital. Instead, they were sick and spending time in the hospital undergoing chemo and other treatments."
Mark returned to Tulsa and started a non-profit charity, “Hydrants of Hope”. All proceeds raised are donated to the Saint Francis Children’s Hospital to assist families with fuel, housing, groceries, etc. during their time at the children’s hospital.
To date, Hydrants of Hope has donated over $175,000 to help multiple families. Mark has always been very excited and proud when it comes to check donation day.
Sadly, he lost his battle on March 16, 2019. He was a man that showed us all to never give up, how to help one another, and his smile brighten every room he walked into.
Through his family and many friends, his legacy and charity will live on.
On Thursday, Sept. 5th, Hydrants of Hope will be hosting the annual Golf Tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Course.
For anyone interested, it is a 4-man scramble, and the cost is $400 per team or you can register as an individual for $100.
