Verdigris batter Logan Hall makes contact with a pitch during a game against Owasso in the Catoosa/Verdigris Classic on Friday, March 19.

Complete annihilation is one way to describe how Verdigris handled its business on the diamond Tuesday night.

The Cardinals were relentless from the beginning, notching 10 hits and 11 runs in the first inning alone on the way to a 12-0 victory over Locust Grove in District 4A-7 action. They finished with 12 hits in all.

The game was called after three innings.

Luke Zaferes and Evan Anderson both recorded home runs during that opening frame, and the latter added a 2-RBI triple for good measure while Jax Ryan and Logan Hall registered a pair of doubles. The other five hits were singles, with Jaren Keith and Cody Bressie driving in runs for Verdigris.

Hall walked away with the most hits on the night, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. His double in the first scored Reese Roller and Jaren Keith, increasing the Cardinals’ lead to 8-0.

Anderson, Zaferes and Bressie logged multiple hits as well with two apiece.

Verdigris (11-1, 6-0 4A-7) loaded the bases in the second thanks to a pair of Pirate errors and a single from Hall, but it failed to generate runs from that situation. The final run of the contest came in the third on an Odin McConnell groundout, which scored Zaferes.

Zaferes earned the win on the mound, striking out five while surrendering two hits and no walks on 37 pitches. Twenty-four of his throws resulted in strikes.

The Cardinals play at 5 p.m. Thursday at Tulsa Union (9-5) of Class 6A.
