Despite allowing three runs in the fifth inning, Verdigris baseball never seemed to be in any real trouble Thursday against Sperry.
The Cardinals increased their winning streak to three games, besting the Pirates 9-4 in the Fort Gibson/Hilldale Tournament. Verdigris managed eight hits in the victory, three of which were doubles.
Luke Zaferes was responsible for two of those. His second one came in the fourth, scoring Jaren Keith to increase the Cardinals’ lead to 5-0.
Keith had the other double, setting himself up to score on a fielder’s choice in the second inning one at-bat after his hit. That run made the spread 3-0 after Ty Gladu and Zaferes scored on the same error in the first.
Sperry mounted a comeback in the fifth with runs on a Brady Benham double, a balk and a fielder’s choice, but Verdigris responded with a pair of runs via a passed ball and an Aaron Buntin single.
The Cardinals scored their final two runs in the sixth when Evan Anderson grounded in Zaferes and Jax Ryan found home on a passed ball.
Logan Hall earned the win, striking out three while allowing no hits and a walk on 42 pitches through three innings.
