BASKETBALL: Chancellor, Lady Cards dominate Jay

Jordan Chancellor came within seven points of outscoring Jay herself.

That is how unstoppable the Verdigris senior was Tuesday night, pouring in 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting — including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc — to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 51-27 road victory. She also tallied seven deflections, three rebounds and a steal.

Eleven of Chancellor’s points and three of her five 3-pointers came in the fourth quarter, in which Verdigris outscored the Lady Bulldogs 18-5. It was quite an improvement team wise from the third period, for the Lady Cardinals managed only six points during that eight-minute stretch.

In all, Verdigris shot 47.6% from the floor while holding Jay to 25% shooting.

Fellow senior Lexy Borgstadt was a force as well, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, six deflections, one assist and one steal. Her younger sister Morgan added nine points, six rebounds, six steals, four blocks and a deflection.

Marsis Foreman led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points, six of which came at the free-throw line. Skylar Brantley had a notable performance as well with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.

Jay made more 3-pointers (4) than 2-point field goals (3), shooting 57.1% from deep.

The Lady Cardinals, ranked sixth in Class 4A, improved to 6-1 with the win and play Rogers County foe Claremore at 4 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Port City Classic, which was moved from the Catoosa Activity Center to the Verdigris Activity Center because of COVID-19 issues.
