Claremore boys basketball had a decent showing at the Vinita Big Dawg Shoot-Out, held Thursday through Saturday.
The Zebras notched a 2-1 record at the tournament, capping their appearance with a 60-48 victory over East Central in the third-place game Saturday. They reached that point by defeating host Vinita 67-37 on Thursday before falling to Will Rogers 56-45 the following day in the semifinals.
Class 5A No. 8 Claremore (4-1) was set to return to action Tuesday night at Skiatook, but that game was postponed because of COVID-19 issues facing the Bulldogs. The contest has yet to be rescheduled.
The next scheduled game is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against Nathan Hale at home.
Here is a recap of how each tournament game went:
CLAREMORE 60, EAST CENTRAL 48: Claremore utilized some strong first-half defense to clinch the third-place trophy.
The Zebras held East Central to only 17 points in the opening 16 minutes to carry a comfortable 16-point lead into halftime. The Cardinals outscored Claremore 31-27 in the second half, but the game was never in doubt.
As the Zebra defense limited East Central’s offensive production, Tanner Steidley and Caison Hartloff went to work on building the early advantage. The pair combined for 20 of Claremore’s 33 first-half points, with Steidley hitting three 3-pointers during that stretch.
Steidley was held scoreless in the second half, finishing with 11 points, but Hartloff, Drake Roark and Gannon Sherl managed to maintain the lead without his contributions.
Hartloff, who scored nine points in the first half, added eight to his count in the fourth quarter to register a game-high 17 points. Roark pitched in nine second-half points – including two triples – to finish with 14 total while Sherl tallied eight of his 10 points in the latter half.
Sean Edmanson and Caylon Williams finished with 17 and 10 points, respectively, to lead East Central.
WILL ROGERS 55, CLAREMORE 45: The Zebras simply couldn’t get their offense going in time to earn a berth in the tournament championship.
Claremore scored nine, nine and 10 points through the first three quarters and trailed 42-28 heading into the fourth period. It rallied in the final eight minutes with 17 points thanks in large part to hitting three 3-pointers and 6-of-7 free throws, but it was too little too late.
Hartloff led the fourth-quarter rally with seven points, including two 3-balls, and Michael McHugh went 5-for-6 at the line while Steidley and Kort Seidel also added field goals, but Will Rogers’ Marcal Johnson kept the Zebras out of striking distance with eight points in the fourth, finishing with 13 total.
Marquel Sutton played a key role for the Ropers as well with 16 points, all of which came after a scoreless first quarter.
Hartloff had a game-high 18 points, and McHugh joined him in double figures with 11 points.
CLAREMORE 67, VINITA 37: Despite getting only three first-half points from its star player Hartloff, Claremore opened the Vinita Big Dawg Shoot-Out with an impressive offensive display.
The Zebras held a 34-13 halftime lead over the tournament host and never relented as they increased that advantage to a 30-point victory. Hartloff eventually found his rhythm and finished with 15 points, but it was Roark who earned “player of the game” honors.
After going scoreless in the first quarter, Roark scored nine points in the second period and added three 3-pointers in the second half to tally a game-high 18 points.
Ethan Farstead also scored in double figures for the Zebras, hitting three shots from beyond the arc on the way to an 11-point outing.
Paul Glasscock paced the Hornets with 13 points.
