Claremore couldn’t quite make it a bronze medal sweep at the Vinita Big Dawg Shoot-Out over the weekend.
The Lady Zebras let a late lead slip away in the final moments against Quapaw, falling 42-39 in the third-place game Saturday. They opened the event Thursday with a 38-33 victory over Miami but landed in the consolation bracket after dropping a 67-25 decision to Class 3A No. 7 Lincoln Christian the next day.
Claremore (1-3) was supposed to travel to Skiatook on Tuesday night, but COVID-19 issues forced the Lady Bulldogs to postpone the contest, which has yet to be rescheduled.
The next scheduled game is at 6 p.m. Friday at Memorial.
Here is a recap of how each tournament game went:
QUAPAW 42, CLAREMORE 39: For Claremore, it was the game that got away.
The Lady Zebras led nearly the entire contest, but some mistakes and missed shots in the final minutes cost it a third-place prize. They held a six-point advantage after one quarter, and despite losing the second and third quarters by a 24-19 count, coach Mike Hugh’s squad clung to a 32-31 lead entering the fourth.
That is when the Lady Wildcats – led by Shea Ottesen and Naomi Daughtery – made their move, though, outscoring Claremore 11-7 in the final frame to steal the victory. Ottesen led all scorers with 19 points, and Daughtery added 14 points.
Grace Bump paced the Lady Zebras with 14 points while Ella Claborn was close behind with 13 points.
LINCOLN CHRISTIAN 67, CLAREMORE 25: The second quarter was a nightmare.
The Lady Zebras remained within striking distance early, trailing 15-7 after the first period, but Lincoln Christian rode a 31-10 second quarter to build an insurmountable 46-17 halftime lead.
The Lady Bulldogs followed that explosion with 21 points in the second half but they didn’t need much more than that because Claremore managed only eight points during that stretch and went scoreless in the fourth quarter.
The box score reflected the offensive struggles experienced by the Lady Zebras, who shot 10-of-30 from the floor (33%). Kylee Ohman led the team with 10 points, two assists and a rebound. Bump grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go along with her seven points.

CLAREMORE 38, MIAMI 33: The shooting wasn’t pretty, but it was just enough for Claremore to advance to the Vinita Big Dawg Shoot-Out semifinals.
Led by Bump, the Lady Zebras overcame a field-goal percentage of 29% (11-of-38) while also hitting only 12 of 22 free throws. Bump finished with 14 points on 4-of-14 shooting, draining three 3-pointers.
Elsewhere, Ohman tallied four assists and three steals to complement her four points, and Rachel Yewell registered six points and four steals.
Claremore led 29-18 after three quarters, but Miami won the fourth 15-9 to make it more respectable. The Lady Zebras held the Lady Wardogs to two points in the third period.
