JAY — The result was never in doubt for the Verdigris girls as they raced to a 59-20 victory over Jay on Tuesday night.
It was only an eight-point game through the first quarter, but the Lady Cardinals opened things up in the next frame to carry a 35-9 lead into halftime.
Lexy Borgstadt, a junior, tallied 12 of her 19 points in the second period while also finishing with 4 rebounds. Kayla Darden (9 points, 3 rebounds) scored 7 points in the frame as well.
Elsewhere on the court for Verdigris, Morgan Borgstadt (8 rebounds) and Kylee McGuire (4 rebounds) recorded 8 points apiece.
The Lady Cardinals outrebounded Jay 37-23 overall and 18-5 on the offensive glass.
Skylar Brantley led the Lady Bulldogs (6-14) with 5 points.
Verdigris, ranked seventh in Class 4A, has now won 11-straight and sports a 19-3 record.
The boys game was much more competitive, with the Cardinals coming away with a 74-67 decision.
Tyler Haddock, a senior, erupted for 26 points, including five 3-pointers and 19 points in the first quarter alone. He also grabbed 8 rebounds.
Jaren Keith, a junior, scored 8 points in both the second and fourth quarter on the way to a 19-point, 4-rebound night.
Ethan Bell came close to double figures as well with 9 points and 4 rebounds. Trent Haddock, Logan Cagle and Brant Hager each scored 6 points, combining for 12 rebounds.
Verdigris led 46-30 at halftime, but Jay won the second half 37-28 to make it interesting down the stretch.
Brody Winfield (21 points), Justin Noblin (14 points) and Loran Kirk (10 points) all scored in double figures for the Bulldogs (7-14). Winfield tallied 13 of his points in the fourth quarter.
Verdigris, now on a four-game winning streak, holds a 16-6 record.
The Cardinals host Rogers County rival Inola for Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
