CATOOSA — The Class 5A No. 20 Claremore Zebras fell to the host Catoosa Indians 66-46 on Thursday night in opening-round action in the Tulsa Teachers Credit Union Port City Classic at the Catoosa Activity Center.
The Zebras (4-8) faced Plainview on Friday morning at 11:30 in the losers bracket. The Indians (8-6) played Class 5A fourth-ranked Edison on Friday night at 8:30 in a winners bracket semifinal.
Caison Hartloff and Nate Potts finished in double figures for Claremore with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Gavin Phillips led all scorers with 24 points for Catoosa. Teammate J Coons had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was tied 9-9 midway through the first quarter, but the Indians finished off the frame with a 10-0 run.
The Zebras kept things more even in the second period, and the end result saw them trailing 36-26 at the half.
Matthew Strickland provided a boost for Claremore as he scored all seven of his points in the second quarter.
Catoosa, however, got off to another strong start to open the second half. The advantage grew to 53-37 at the end of the third thanks to solid team play.
"I was pleased with our defense and rebounding," Catoosa coach John Coons said. "We did what we want to do, hold people in the 40s or less. Tonight was probably the most complete game we have played offensively too. I was very proud of the way we moved the ball and executed."
NOTE: The Catoosa girls got 12 points from Faith Hopkins in a 37-24 defeat against Bishop Kelley in another opening-round game on Thursday.
The Lady Indians (5-9) got things started Friday morning at 10 with a losers bracket game against Class 4A No. 19 Plainview.
