WACO, Texas – The Rogers State men's soccer team totaled five All-Heartland Conference selections as announced by the league on Thursday (Nov. 1).
Junior forward Chris Sowder was an All-Heartland Second Team pick with senior forward Kevin Kwarteng, senior midfielder Noah Robson, senior defender Ellis Ashworth and sophomore defender Michael Turner earning All-Heartland Third Team honors.
Sowder, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., paced the Hillcats with nine goals, ranking fifth in the Heartland Conference.
The forward made 15 starts and played 1,215 minutes in his junior season in the navy and red. He added three assists for a team-high 21 points. Sowder started and ended the season with a brace. The junior scored two goals in a season-opening win against Drury and went for two goals against Texas A&M International in the season finale. He tallied two assists in a win over Rockhurst early in the season. For the season, he tallied 38 shots and a team-high 22 shots on goal. In his three-year career at RSU, Sowder has made 45 appearances with 13 goals and four assists. This is Sowder's first all-conference selection.
Robson, a senior from Liverpool, England, led the Heartland Conference with nine assists during the 2018 campaign. He added three goals for 15 points in his senior season as a all-league pick in the midfield.
Robson started all 18 games in the midfield and played 1,439 minutes. The senior paced the Hillcats with 39 shots with 12 shots on goal. He came on strong as the end of the season with six assists in the final eight games. Seven of his nine assists and all three of his goals came in Heartland Conference play. Twice this season he registered games with one goal and one assist. For his two-year career at RSU, Nobson made 29 starts with four goals and 13 assists in 32 games. This is Robson's first all-conference selection.
Ashworth, a senior from Brentwood, England, earned all-conference honors for the second straight season on defense. The senior center back started in all 18 games on the backline and played 1,560 minutes to rank second on the team. He helped the defense total seven shutouts during the 2018 season.
Ashworth was a three-year starter in the navy and red, and he started in 50 games during his three seasons. In his career, he played 4,345 minutes. As a junior, Ashworth was named All-Heartland Third Team and Scholar All-West Region by the United Soccer Coaches.
Kwarteng, a senior from London, England, was a third team selection as a forward. He started in 13 games and posted two goals and two assists.
He scored the game-winning goal in a 4-0 victory over St. Edward's in his senior campaign. Kwarteng added his second goal early in a draw with Newman. For the season, he totaled 1,003 minutes on the pitch with 27 shots and eight shots on goal. In his four-year career in the navy and red, Kwarteng made 48 starts in 68 games with 12 goals and 11 assists. This is Kwarteng's first all-conference selection.
Turner, a sophomore from Ramford, England, was selected all-league third team as a defender. The center back started in all 18 games and played a team-high 1,578 minutes.
A threat on set pieces, Turner totaled three goals this season, including the game-winning tally in a 3-0 victory over UT Permian Basin. The sophomore posted 16 shots with six shots on goal. On defense Turner helped the Hillcats post seven shutouts during the season. In his two seasons at RSU, Turner has made 26 starts in 29 games with 2,466 minutes played. This is Turner's first all-conference selection.
The Hillcats finished the season at 8-8-2 and 6-6-2 in the Heartland Conference.
